This is why i am..

Choose a character from a novel or play of recognized literary merit and write an essay in which you (a) briefly describe the standards of the fictional society in which the character exists and (b) show how the character is affected by and responds to those standards. In your essay do not merely summarize the plot.

In this novel the character, Perry Edward Smith, is a perfect example of how the people and events surrounding a person can affect their life. He lived through many traumatic occurrences during his childhood. These included a neglectful household resulting in him being put into a Catholic orphanage for a good while. His education maxed out in the third grade. All these events and occurrences in Smith’s  life are just topped off in the fact that his mother and sister have died and his brother committed suicide. He also has a somewhat unloving father figure in his life. Having a father who doesn’t ever care and shows no affection to his son or the people around him could result in the son becoming damaged emotionally and causing the production of certain personality traits of a killer. It could go the same way for his other sister Barbara as far as the way she treated him. She treated him with utter and complete disrespect no matter what, even in the time of death in the family. This just fed the hate growing in Perry’s heart. A single death in the family could drive someone mad in present times, just imagine if you had everything going on that Smith did in his life. His surroundings definitely played a role in his madness in this story. A good example of this was his recent crash on a motorcycle which damaged his legs pretty badly. There are some people in this world who can take a lot, but at some point in time they are going to reach their breaking point. After all this pile up, Smith’s response to all these events only seems natural. When he kills all the people he kills in the novel its clearly because he has been messed up in the head progressively throughout the years. What grown man wouldn’t be after going through what he’s been through everyday of his life since birth. Perry Edward Smith pretty much sums up what it is to be affected by your family and surrounding with the most common response of going insane.

Not One But Two..

The novel In Cold Blood by Truman Capote was not only made into a movie once but was remade again later. The first showing of this book into a feature film was in 1967, and it was remade later in 1996. In the most recent movie Anthony Edwards and Eric Roberts starred as Dick Hickock and Perry Smith. I have yet to see this movie but after reading this book i think i want to see it because it would make for an excellent crime/drama film.

Mystery Solved….Good Ending

Its always strange how the bad guys get caught. In this case Hickock and Smith’s ex-cellmate told of these premeditated plans to Alvin Dewey. It Almost seemed to easy. However nobody in the bureau has any idea of where to find these two even after stopping by their family’s houses. But then again something as simple as license plates get them caught and brought in for questioning where Hickock confesses. They are both sentenced to death. now i’m not a big fan of the death penalty but it always delights me to see the bad guys go away and thats always a good way to end out a story. So since this was based on actual occurrences, that makes this story all the more better with an excellent ending.

Its Not His Fault…

In this section i’m reading i finally understand what can drive a person to killing. Perry when he was young was a goodhearted kid who sometimes rebelled against authority, but what young kid didn’t? Growing up he had a myriad of problems in his life. Starting with the divorce of his parents he was turned away by both of them and didn’t have a place to stay so he ended up in a Catholic orphanage. Even at this orphanage he wasn’t treated right, so eventually his dad takes him back. Theres so much more to list on this guy but its a ridiculous amount that ranges from everyone dying around him to meeting up with Dick Hickock for the first time in prison. In all I can’t blame this guy for being the way he is……its not his fault.

How will Dewey do it?

I now see where this story is heading. It has made a transfer to make it more into a crime/mystery story. Now Alvin Dewey the lead investigator for the Kansas Bureau of Investigations is on the case trying to sniff out the two murderers who seem to be getting away with the crime. At this point i’m pretty sure Hickock and Smith will get away with this because there is little to almost no evidence pointing in their direction except for a footprint left behind. There was no motive, nothing stolen except a radio, and really nothing there to still, so Dewey is baffled right now as to who did this crime. I look forward to reading about Dewey’s method of solving this murder mystery.

The Meet

Just like the story has been leading up, once the group of killers met up with the Clutter family in their ominous black painted cadillac, they killed them all. I’m kind of lost now as to where the story will go next. At the beginning it seemed like the Clutter family were main characters in this story and maybe someway or somehow they would make it out of this predicament alive, but i guess not. I wonder what the point of killing off these characters so fast was; i guess i’ll just read on and see what the rest of the story has to offer.

Ignorance is Bliss.

This books dives in fast and even though its a book i feel like i’m in a movie. in the beginning of this book there is a sense of suspense created by flipping between the blissfully ignorant family, the Clutters, and the team of Perry Smith and Dick Hickock, who are traveling across Kansas to kill them. I know they are going to kill this family pretty much because Capote keep hinting it to me. This is a pretty decent start and I can’t wait until these two force meet up so i can see what happens.
