This is why i am..

Choose a character from a novel or play of recognized literary merit and write an essay in which you (a) briefly describe the standards of the fictional society in which the character exists and (b) show how the character is affected by and responds to those standards. In your essay do not merely summarize the plot.

In this novel the character, Perry Edward Smith, is a perfect example of how the people and events surrounding a person can affect their life. He lived through many traumatic occurrences during his childhood. These included a neglectful household resulting in him being put into a Catholic orphanage for a good while. His education maxed out in the third grade. All these events and occurrences in Smith’s  life are just topped off in the fact that his mother and sister have died and his brother committed suicide. He also has a somewhat unloving father figure in his life. Having a father who doesn’t ever care and shows no affection to his son or the people around him could result in the son becoming damaged emotionally and causing the production of certain personality traits of a killer. It could go the same way for his other sister Barbara as far as the way she treated him. She treated him with utter and complete disrespect no matter what, even in the time of death in the family. This just fed the hate growing in Perry’s heart. A single death in the family could drive someone mad in present times, just imagine if you had everything going on that Smith did in his life. His surroundings definitely played a role in his madness in this story. A good example of this was his recent crash on a motorcycle which damaged his legs pretty badly. There are some people in this world who can take a lot, but at some point in time they are going to reach their breaking point. After all this pile up, Smith’s response to all these events only seems natural. When he kills all the people he kills in the novel its clearly because he has been messed up in the head progressively throughout the years. What grown man wouldn’t be after going through what he’s been through everyday of his life since birth. Perry Edward Smith pretty much sums up what it is to be affected by your family and surrounding with the most common response of going insane.
